Chapter 19

Sabrina

Sabrina only had two weeks to try to get things figured out with Bryan before Bella showed up.

Changing their plan was too late. At least for her. She couldn’t let Bella think Sabrina’s life was less than it actually was.

The master bedroom was set up with two beds already which seemed slightly weird until Bryan explained that Mr. Nelson had apologized for the weird layout. His wife needed a different style of mattress and sometimes she couldn’t handle him being too close because she hurt.

Having the two beds made it less uncomfortable, but they still tried to keep it friendly.

Two nights passed and Sabrina desperately needed a break from walking on eggshells. She didn’t want to upset him and she didn’t want to get into another stupid fight when she really didn’t have a reason to fight. She just felt so… contentious. She wanted something to feel right about what they were doing.

Lying about being married and living like they were married were both so wrong, but she couldn’t back down now.

But what was his reason for sticking it out? He couldn’t need the same things she did. He didn’t seem prideful at all which only added to her frustration over him.

The more she got to know him, the more she liked him.

Dang it.

“Sabrina?” Bryan’s voice carried up the stairs to their joint bedroom where Sabrina stood at the end of her bed, folding laundry.

“Yeah.” She set the towel down and walked to the catwalk to look out over the living room below. Bryan held bags in his hands and stared up at her. “Would you like to have dinner with me? I picked up some food from Chef’s.”

“Yes, thank you.” Formal. She was trying so hard to keep things formal between them. Or maybe that was the wrong word for what she was seeking. Professional? Except they didn’t have a contract between them. What kept them professional? What kept them on their sides of the “line”?

Sabrina needed the rules. She needed to know what was going to keep them from hurting each other. Because at the rate she was going, she already considered him a friend, even with all of his snarky comments and the way he’d put her work down at the art show. At least she’d shown him and all of her art sold. That had helped her pride and how she looked at him a lot more than she’d realized it would.

That money should be available soon. Anne said she just needed to run numbers and get a check written for Sabrina. That left Sabrina feeling much more certain about her future with that possibility coming to fruition.

Sabrina finished folding the last two towels and then rushed down the stairs. She was starving. Neither of them had really discussed the food situation or the utilities and Sabrina tried to just eat the food that had been left behind by the Nelsons.

But prunes and soft foods were hard to stomach day in and day out.

She needed real food.
